Publisher: Twisted Spice Publications

Synopsis via Goodreads:

The assignment:
Collect lifestones from humans after they die.

Rebellious, sixteen-year-old Naomi craves a normal life, but unfortunately, she’s a Grim by birth. That’s right, she sees dead people and hoards their living essence in a stone. Not a fun occupation.

In order to be good at her job, she must live among human teenagers for weeks at a time. But Naomi soon becomes attached to the kids she’s been assigned to watch over. And knowing that these teens are gonna die under less than ideal circumstances, she has the opportunity to prevent their deaths from occurring. Only one big problem—interfering with death is the worst crime a Grim can commit. If she intervenes, she’ll put herself and her family in danger.

Naomi must make the hardest choice of her career, go against the sacred covenant or watch her new friends walk blindly to their deaths.

Only one thing is for certain—Naomi has a grim knack for finding trouble and she’s about to break all the rules...

"Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same"
- All At Once, The Fray

Why did I start with a quote? Because I needed to make a point. And to me, this is the entire point of the book. Here's the deal: Naomi knows exactly what she is supposed to do. She's been doing it her whole life, save a couple infractions. But for the most part, she's right on track action-wise. So the problem?  She gets too attached to humans. Lowly little humans who die. Most Grims are fine with it, but she is not.

The world-building is absolutely amazing. Granted, it's rather simplistic. but it's rather well-thought out and the layout was one I could follow. Nowhere seemed like a real place to me (pun very much intended). And all the characters were pretty believable. Mr. Dunningham is the poster child of a dictator. Naomi's dad and her older brother are kind enough, but definitely greedy and power-hungry. Maybe not for the reasons you'd think, but it is what it is.

As for Naomi, I found myself really attached to her. I mean, duh. She's sympathetic towards Humans. Thanks, girl! *ahem* She's personally someone I'd want as a friend because she's so... loyal, I suppose. Maybe not to the right people, but that's totally a matter of opinion. I admire her quite a bit. She's a mix of Grim and her own self and while I may not like the Grim part, it makes sense. So I loved learning more about her and seeing her interact with the Humans and all that. The story is told in first person, from Naomi's POV. She's an amazing voice for this kind of story, too. I'm not sure how to describe it exactly, but she's rather observant and has a blunt honesty, even if she's trying to hide something from herself.

The plot: fast-paced. I mean, really, there isn't a dull moment. Sometimes that feels rushed, but this felt perfect. I couldn't put it down once I really got into it. I also loved that it was divided into parts. I'm a sucker for parts. I'm also a sucker for those attractive guys that tend to pop up in YA. So needless to say, Hunter and later Colden had my attention. It's not a love triangle thing, in case seeing two guys' names freaks you out. But I was shipping left and right nonetheless. (I should probably stop but it's fun. Really.)

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It's a quick ready and easy to follow. Naomi's perspective was great and the concept and thoughts it provoked were amazing. Should she do what she's supposed to do or do what she thinks is right? What if they're the same? What if they're totally different? No spoilers for you, but I will say it's an exciting dilemma to watch unfold!
