Branded (Sinners #1) by Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki
Release Date: 06/28/13
252 pages

Goodreads Summary:

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.

Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.

Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.
Amazon / Barnes and Noble

I think the best word to sum this up is INTENSE. Right from the beginning and pretty much non-stop from there. Seriously, I'm still shaking, thinking about it now. I love how many issues this dystopian bring up. Morals, corruption, poverty, violence, humanity. I love stuff like that. And I totally want more

To me, Lexi was likable from the first page. Admittedly, I was shocked. Page one and she's about to hang herself. But once she got explaining and running from her life and defending her life... I thought. Holy crap. This girl is truly something. I admire her so much. She has the courage to do stupid things for the ones she loves. Maybe it doesn't seem like an admirable trait, but for her it is. She came from a pretty messed up family, and so watching her open up was beyond relieving.
And I love that it started with a young girl that she befriended early on. Alyssa. She has an attitude at first, so I was kind of put off by her. But oh my God. She grew on me the way she grew on Lexi. She's so young, but she's been through so much.
And since we're talking about relationships, I will mention Cole. Aka the person who provides the romance in this novel. But let me tell you that it certainly doesn't start that way. Sure, I knew it right about. Lexi's guard is rather close to her age? Seriously, what else do you expect? But I like how it came about naturally. They certainly didn't mean to fall for each other- especially because that's worse than any sin and calls for an immediate execution.
Yikes is right.
So this was one forbidden romance that had me shaking the whole time. Because I love them together so much.

Well, it's a dystopian, like I said. But there's something really deep and dark and gritty about it. I mean, even more so than in others. I think most of this has to do with the style- most dystopians have implied violence and poverty. This one literally slaps you in the face with it every chance it gets. The Hole is Hell for all intents and purposes. And I sure have  no trouble believing it. I'm still shaking, it's actually a little scary. But that's how intense it was for me.
There's a lot going on here, and there's no way to sum it all up here without ruining everything. Half the fun is all those surprises. Honestly, I've been very good at predicting stuff lately. And this one managed to get me a few times. I am pleasantly surprised. And I can't wait for more.

Rating: 4 stars

Why:  I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved it.
(I rarely give anything higher to first books in a series.)

Recommendation: anyone who can use another dystopian. But particularly those who want something a little different. I thought the idea of a Hole was a great way to get the plot going. And then all the rules and regulations and fear... All delivered in a new, refreshing way.

About the Authors

Abi and Missy met in the summer of 1999 at college orientation and have been best friends ever since. After college, they added jobs, husbands and kids to their lives, but they still found time for their friendship. Instead of hanging out on weekends, they went to dinner once a month and reviewed books. What started out as an enjoyable hobby has now become an incredible adventure.
