Goodreads Summary

Penelope is a witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then, she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away.

When she’s finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the tests and get access to the information she needs to find "her" demon. To take back what was stolen.

Then she meets Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her secret—but he also has one of his own.

Suddenly, Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their own agenda…and they’re far too interested  in her.

Review

Let me tell you! I fell in love with that cover. I love the font. I love the use of purple and light. LOVE it. I didn't read the summary until I actually got the review copy. I really didn't need to. I was hooked pretty quickly. The first scene is a demon attack. A DEMON attack. That's exciting stuff. It took me a while to finish this, but I enjoyed reading when I did read it.

Characters

Penelope. I feel so bad because I forgot her name so many times. Bad sign, right? I chalk it up to Carter because he was always calling her some nickname or another. But she herself is admirable. Stupid. Especially at the end. *shakes my head* But it was still admirable in a way. She's loyal and determined.
As for Carter... *excited squeal* I loved it every time he popped up. It was a bit stalkerish but their magic is connected, so he can feel her whether he wants to or not. Oh, it still sounds stalkerish. But believe me when I say he totally makes you forget all that. He's cocky, sure, but he can be pretty sweet and helpful.
Some other characters are Connie, Ric, Pop, and Gran.
Connie is sweet enough. She's almost the opposite of Penelope. While Penelope is rather tom-boyish and clueless about guys (ahem), Connie is more fashion-oriented and has a boyfriend.
Oh, another minor character right there. Thomas.
That's about it, though. Rather small cast, but all characters are unique and believable. That's always a relief.

Plot

The action starts right away and it doesn't slow down. Okay, it slows down every now and then. But there is a bunch of action. When it isn't action, it's secrets. And when it isn't secrets, it's romance. "Swoon-worthy romance" indeed.
I feel like I haven't read a paranormal in a while and I certainly missed it. Reading about witches and demons was like slipping on a favorite pair of shoes, you know? I really liked it.
It got annoying at times because of the stupid secrets and you just want to KNOW already. And then when it was finally revealed, you're like, oh, NOW you spill?
But I was mostly relieved. Those are some pretty crazy secrets. I will not even hint at them :)
I loved the world Danielle Ellison built and how well she integrated witches into our society. All those pop culture witch references were made and nicely tucked into the larger "true" story of witches and demons.
I really like when an author can pull that off. And in my opinion, she managed to pull it off. This was a great, quick read. I can't wait for some more.

Rating: 4 stars

Why: Action, romance, secrets. Need I say more?
Recommendation: Those who need some more paranormal in their lives. Also those who need a new book boyfriend.

About the Author

Danielle Ellison is from a small town in West Virginia. She spent her childhood pretending to fly and talking to imaginary friends. When she grew up, she finally flew away (in an airplane) and started traveling the world. She hasn’t stopped yet, but someday she may decide to settle in one place. Her real life friends would definitely like that; they would probably also like if she stopped talking to her characters out loud.
SALT comes out in January 2014. In October 2014, FOLLOW ME THROUGH DARKNESS (book one of the BOUNDLESS Trilogy) comes out. She's got a busy few years!
